Alan is also a successful novelist credits include Mr MacGregor, The Last Lighthouse Keeper, Animal Instinct, Only Dad and more recently Rosie as well as his memoirs Trowel & Error.

 

He was honoured with an MBE in the 1999 New Year's Honours List.
