Jimmie MacGregor MBE

Jimmie MacGregor is a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art where he specialised in ceramics. He has done what he calls all the usual jobs schoolteacher, labourer, engraver, hospital porter, folk musician, potter, illustrator, and radio and television presenter. He is acknowledged as a seminal influence in the early days of the British folk music revival, and with his partner Robin Hall remained at the fore-front of that movement for more than 20 years. He has toured the length and breadth of the country many times appearing in venues ranging from the smallest folk clubs to the Albert and Festival halls and everything in between.

There have been performances in France Germany Belgium Austria Holland and Hungary, and further afield, Israel, Moscow and the Arab Emirates.

Jimmie has made more than 20 record albums and he has composed and played theme music for radio and television in, addition to voice over commentaries on various themes. His highly successful live daily radio programme, 'MacGregor's Gathering' ran for more than 10 years and won an award from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for significant contribution to wildlife. Following a recording trip to Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, the Canadian High Commission together with the Canadian Tourist Board named MacGregor's Gathering best Canadian radio series of 1990.

Jimmie MacGregor has made a number of videos, published collections of folk songs and books based on his long distance walks for radio and television. He is a life member of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Friends of Loch Lomond, and the John Muir Trust. He is also president of the Association for the protection of Rural Scotland and Friends of the River Kelvin.

In 1993 he was made a fellow of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, and was awarded an M.B.E. in the 1994 Queen's new year honours list for services to Scottish heritage and culture. He currently presents a series of illustrated talks based on programme making travels in Scotland, Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada and in the Arctic. In what spare time is available, Jimmie is a collector of paintings, ceramics, old cars, antiques and a wide variety of junk. His other obsessions are the outdoors, wildlife and anything and everything Scottish.
